Chiropractic for Bedwetting

Most children wet the bed for the first few years of life. By the age of 4 or 5, however, children should be able to establish proper bladder control. In most cases, bedwetting is considered an unfortunate childhood problem, and no outside treatment is sought.

How can chiropractic help with bedwetting?

The medical explanation: Emptying of the urinary bladder is controlled by two muscles, and the nerve supple to these muscles comes from the sacral parasympathetic nerves from S2 to S4 (tailbone nerves).

The sacrum (or tailbone) develops as five separate segments, which begin to fuse together as the child reaches puberty. Eventually, the segments will all fuse and the sacrum will be one single bone, but this does not occur until the mid-20s. Because sacral segments are separate during the early years of life, it is possible that misalignment of these segments can cause nerve irritation. If this nerve irritation is to the area of the bladder, it may be the cause of the inappropriate bladder function associated with bedwetting.

Chiropractic adjustments to the sacrum can help realign the segments and decrease the nerve irritation. For some patients, bedwetting completely ceases after the spine is adjusted.
