Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an Oriental Modality which is used to treat both pain and dysfunction of the body. It consists mostly of fine needles inserted into specific acupoints on the skin. There is an energy network just below the surface of the skin that communicates from the exterior to the internal structures. Without harmonious flow and balance in this network, pain and dysfunction will occur. The goal is to restore balance to the body's energy to eliminate dysfunction.
How Painful?
These fine needles are not much thicker than a hair and nothing like an ordinary needle. A slight tingling sensation or similar feeling of a mosquito bite may be experienced, you may not even know the needles have been inserted. Electrical stimulation on the acupoint in conjunction with the needle may be used. Many people find treatments to be very relaxing.
How safe?
Acupuncture is completely safe when performed by a licensed professional. Sterile needles are used and disposed of after every use, making infection almost impossible.
How many treatments?
This will vary with each individual and their condition. Chronic problems usually require more treatments while some patients have relief after the first treatment. A small percentage may experience elevated symptoms as the body normalizes, there is no alarm for this as improvement will shortly follow.
